Summary
Hope burns bright during the darkest hours of the Second World War in a four-part drama based on Anthony Doerr's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, which has been adapted for the screen by Steven Knight and directed by Shawn Levy. Daniel LeBlanc (Mark Ruffalo) and his blind daughter Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) flee German-occupied Paris in possession of a priceless treasure, a legendary diamond known as the Sea of Flames. They seek refuge with Daniel's reclusive uncle Etienne (Hugh Laurie) in the coastal resort of Saint-Malo. Father and daughter are pursued by a Gestapo officer called Von Rumpel (Lars Eidinger), who covets the jewel. In Saint-Malo, Marie-Laure's fate collides with orphaned German teenager Werner Pfennig (Louis Hofmann), who should be reporting Etienne's clandestine radio broadcasts on behalf of the French resistance to Hitler's regime.
